Irrigation in Turkmenistan is largely dependent on Karakum Main Canal which originates on the left bank of Amu Darya River near city of Kerki. The canal with a maximum inflow capacity of 650 m3/s is over 1100 km long and crosses Karakum Desert from east to west irrigating some 900 000 ha which are located mostly in the alluvial plains of Mary and Tedzhen upstream of Ashgabat, the capital city. Karakum Canal is also used for navigation.

Main objectives of the project are to assist the Ministry of Land Reclamation and Water Management of Turkmenistan in:
– the preparation of a first stage Irrigation and Drainage Project according to the standards of international lending institutions
– establishment of a basis for medium-term investment possibilities in the irrigation and drainage sector.

Scope of the work includes:
• the Hydraulic Operational Study for the Karakum Canal, taking into account the present and future operational requirements, irrigation regimes, and diversions along the canal;
• the feasibility study for reconstruction of two essential control structures on the Karakum Canal at km:326 and km:456 from its head; and preparation of detailed design and bidding documents for the one having the first priority;
• the Water Management and Drainage Studies for irrigated area along the left bank of the Amu Darya, and in parts of the Mary region, focusing on the selection of study areas from the 550 000 ha irrigation network, identification of irrigation and drainage problems in the selected 60 000 ha study areas and preparation of detailed terms of reference and cost estimates for follow-on studies at these areas.
