According to the Terms of Reference and upon successful completion of Phase I, Phase II of the Preparation Study of the Uzbekistan Drainage Project was also awarded to the Joint Venture Temelsu involved.

Phase II was essentially a pre-feasibility study aimed identifying the interventions which will improve the drainage disposal system on the right bank of the Amu Darya in Uzbekistan (RADU), particularly with the aim of stopping or reversing the deterioration in river water quality which has occurred during the past 40 years.

The objectives for Phase II were to:
– Develop and evaluate at pre-feasibility level the eleven selected options identified during Phase I as well as the earlier Right Bank Collector Drain (RBCD), aiming at solving or reducing the drainage disposal problems on the RADU area in a cost effective and environmentally sound manner
– Recommend the most promising options for further feasibility and detailed design studies.

During Phase II, eleven options and RBCD were evaluated against three background scenarios developed considering minimal change, low level development and high level development in the economical conditions in Uzbekistan. As a result of these studies, three project packages were identified for further consideration in Phase III:
– Beruni Gravity Scheme in Karakalpakstan,
– Improving Management of Collector Drainage Water in Kashkadarya,
– Replacing Karateren Pumping Station in Karakalpakstan.
