Stormwater Drainage Master Plan for City of Antalya aims to define the measures to eliminate short and long term stormwater drainage problems of Antalya, the most important tourism center of the country.
The city can be divided into three main sections with respect to topographical and geological characteristics:
1. Konyaaltı Region: is a plain area at the sea level, Boğaçay River and its tributaries flows through the region. Drainage problems in the region are caused by the high level of groundwater table and location of the city at the sea level.
2. City Center: Although the region is above the sea level, this part of the city encounters serious flood problems due to the natural pervious travertine spoiled by urban settlements. In some parts of the region, basement floors of the buildings are flooded due to elevation of streets are higher than the buildings’. In some parts the situation is vice versa, the water form puddles in the streets where the stormwater system doesn’t exist.
3. Eastern Region: Similar to Konyaaltı Region, the main reason of flood problem is high level of groundwater table and location at the sea level.
During the periods of heavy rainfall, the puddles are causing congestion in traffic and houses are flooded. The foundations of the buildings are effected due to high level groundwater table.
World Bank finances the project. The target year of the study is 2025.
