Description of the Project:
The Shamkirchay Dam is located on the Shamkirchay Creek which is the tributary of the Kura River at a distance of 36 km to the the city Gence in the north-west region of Azerbaijan. Its purpose is to produce electricity and provide irrigation with a dam of central core-wall rock fill dam type. Having a drainage area of 1170 km2 and a total reservoir volume of 160 hm3, the dam height is 125 m above the thalveg and 150 m above the foundation. While the diversion, energy tunnel and spillway tunnel is located at the left shore, the power station is placed at the right shore. The derivation capacity is 165 m3/s, spillway capacity is 697 m3/s, maximum operation level is 696 m.

The power station is equipped with 6 horizontal axis, Francis-type turbines of each 4 MW installed capacity. By using the water released from the power station, a total agricultural land area of 20 083 ha will be irrigated in the regions of Gence, Shamkir and Khanlar.

Description of Services Provided by TEMELSU:
Engineering services by Temelsu for the Shamkirchay Dam and HEPP Project were provided in two phases as follows:

1. Bidding Design and Documents:
By comparing various dam types and locations within this scope, the most economical dam type and location was fixed and the design for the main line together with administrative and technical specifications were prepared.

2. Final Design:
Within this scope, final designs of all construction works, machinery and electrics for the Shamkirchay dam as well as hydraulic, static and reinforcement concrete calculations of all structures and design calculations of hydro-mechanic components and electrical equipments were submitted.
