Namakhvani HPP Cascade Project has been planned to utilize the hydropower potential of River Rioni in Georgia between the elevations of 357 m and 205 m. Namakhvani cascade comprises two hydropower schemes. The projects illustrated in this review report will utilize the hydropower potential of the Rioni River through two separate plants, Upper Namakhvani and Lower Namakhvani.
Upper Namakhvani is the most upstream scheme of the cascade. The Upper Namakhvani project is composed of the following features.
- A 59 m high gravity dam together with appurtenant structures
- Diversion tunnel with upstream and downstream cofferdams
- A gated overflow spillway system
- Low level outlet
- Power intake and power conduit
- An above-ground powerhouse with 2 Kaplan turbines each at 46 MW capacity
- A 220 kV switchyard
Lower Namakhvani scheme being the key hydro-project of the Rioni system is composed of the following features.
- 99 m high RCC gravity dam associated with appurtenant structures
- A diversion tunnel with upstream and downstream cofferdams
- Gated overflow spillway
- Low level outlet
- A small powerhouse (12 MW) for ecological flow release
- A power intake and 4.4 km long power tunnel in 9.0 m diameter
- A surge tank and 3 penstocks
- An above-ground powerhouse with an installed capacity of 323 MW having 3 Francis units.
- A 220 kV switchyard
Temelsu will perform Engineering (Preliminary Design, Final Design and Detailed Construction Design) and Related Services (works) for the Namakhvani Cascade Hydropower Plant (HPP) and Kutaisi – Alpana Road Relocation Works Project, Georgia.
