Karkamış Dam located on the River Euphrates is the last one of the system of dams within Turkish borders. It has a catchment area of 102 612 km2. The dam is a combination of earth fill and concrete gravity types with a height of 29 m. above foundation, a crest length of 1607.79 m., embankment volume of 2 100 000 m3., concrete volume of 450000 m3 . Volume of its reservoir is 156.90 million m3. and the spillway capacity is 17411 m3./sec. The main purpose of the dam is the production of 652.5 GWh of hydroelectric energy through its powerplant with 6 units, with each an installed capacity of 32 MW.

The controlled spillway consists of 16 openings; each equipped with a radial gate 13.75 m. wide and 12.5 m. high. These openings are separated by 15 piers, each with a width of 3.0 m. A stilling basin 265 m. wide and 26 m. long will be used to dissipate the energy of probable maximum flood.

The project is the implementation of Karkamış Dam and HEPP on a turnkey basis in 48 months from commencement date of contract with full financing of all the works, by the consortium consisting of Elin (Austria), Voith (Austria) and Verbund Plan (Austria) forming the Electromechanical Works Party and Yüksel İnşaat (Turkey) with Temelsu (Turkey) forming the Civil Works Party. Temelsu and Verbund Plan have executed the proper overall coordination. Temelsu in particular was responsible on its own of the preparation of the detail designs and as-built drawings for all the civil works of the project.
