Fedan Dam is planned for irrigation purpose and is located on Wadi Fedan. The drainage area of the dam is 299 km2. The dam is a central-cored gravel fill type with a height of 37 m above the river bed and is located at an elevation of 5 m below sea level at the end of a gorge formed by granitic rocks. Its crest width is 8.0 m and crest length is 381.5 m with an embankment volume of 954 000 m3. The dam will create a reservoir with a volume of 10.16 million m3. 14 m deep alluvium will be sealed off by a plastic concrete diaphragm wall. A saddle (auxiliary) dam located on the right bank is designed to plug an existing gully. The spillway is designed for a probable maximum flood of 1136 m3/sec and is a free flow ogee type with a crest length of 70.0 m designed for a head of 3.96 m. A concrete lined chute channel 15.90 m long is followed by a 10 m long unlined channel on sound granite and will convey the spillway discharges to the downstream river bed.
The engineering services provided within the scope of the project cover:
• Review and appraisal of the existing data and previous studies,
• Identification and comprehensive assessment of potential dam sites,
• Selection of the final dam site,
• Hydrological studies,
• Assessment of geological and geotechnical studies including construction materials,
• Optimization of the storage capacity and dam height and selection of dam type,
• Preliminary design of dam,
• Preparation of quantity and cost estimates,
• Preparation of economic analysis,
• Preparation of final designs for the diversion facilities, the dam, the spillway and the bottom outlet,
• Preparation of bill of quantities and cost estimates,
• Preparation of technical specifications and tender documents (only for the dam and appurtenant structures)
